Sad news out of Foshan this weekend, after a 51-year-old foreign male murdered a woman in a local bar before taking his own life.
The bodies of the victim and man were discovered on July 17 near the cash register inside Tabu (Chinese name: 森宝酒馆) by a staff member. Police were called at 7.35pm and both individuals were declared dead at the scene.
The alleged murderer, a man known around town as Jamal, was a longtime expat and lived in Foshan.
Reports circulating on Chinese media indicate Jamal used a knife to kill the 42-year-old female victim before ending his own life.
That’s spoke with a number of Foshan and Guangzhou residents who were familiar with Jamal and all stated he was a friendly man and regular patron at a number of notable Guangzhou bars and eateries.
"He seemed nice and relaxed," said Tony Avila, a former bar manager in Foshan. "But I didn't know him well."
One person we spoke with, who asked to remain anonymous due to the shocking nature of the case, told us that the victim was Jamal’s estranged girlfriend, although others have also stated she was his wife.
The investigation is currently ongoing, according to police in Foshan.
UPDATE (July 21, 2016, 11.05am CST): This article has been updated to remove mention of Jamal being the owner of the establishment the murder took place in. The name of the bar has also been corrected from Ta Ba to Tabu.
