A man hit by a truck in the heart of Sanlitun was left under the vehicle for almost two hours before police and medical professionals were able to clear the scene. As the motionless cyclist lay trapped beneath the truck, marked ‘Chaoyang Sanitation,’ onlookers gathered to photograph the chaos.

Although a small vehicle marked ‘999’ was parked close by, the driver – dressed in smocks – was reported to be smoking cigarettes as he waited for assitance. Before further emergency services could arrive through heavy congestion, a lone traffic policeman was seen redirecting vehicles around the site of the accident at the intersection of Gongti Beilu, Gongti Donglu and Xindong Lu.

It is unclear whether the victim was killed upon impact. But eyewitnesses report a wait of almost two hours for police and a better-equipped ambulance, despite the fact that Sanlitun Hospital is located just 400 meters away from the incident.

The whole area was brought to a standstill by the accident.
