While Tim Burton is perhaps best known for his roles as director, producer, writer and animator, new Shanghai art exhibition The World of Tim Burton pays homage to his evolution as an artist.
Featuring over 500 pieces of his work dating back to his childhood, the exhibit is a truly impressive glimpse into a brilliant creative mind.
Tim Burton himself attended a media press event the day before the gallery opened. He said it was surreal to be in Shanghai, as this is the first time the exhibit has made it to China. He also said he was grateful to the development of technology for allowing him the opportunities to share his art with more people.
The exhibit features many highly unusual and special pieces, from original sketches of 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' characters Oogie Boogie and Sally, to a handwritten note to Johnny Depp from the set of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.'
The note reads:
Dear Johnny,
I had a thought about a line when you go into the chocolate room! something like-
'Everything in this room is edible, even I'm edible...but that's called cannibalism and is not acceptable in most societies.'
let me know if something like this sounds right as I can talk to John August about it.

The rest, they say, is history!
The art exhibit also includes an interactive section where visitors can take photos with 3D renditions of some of Burton's illustations. Head Curator Jenny He tells us it has been thoughtfully included because of the Chinese's love of taking selfies. Good thinking!
