Guangzhou Taxis May Soon Feature CCTV 'Smart System'

Guangzhou transportation authorities are currently considering a new taxi regulation that would force every cab to install a ‘smart system’ that would include three CCTV cameras.

The aim of the scheme is to better address passenger complaints (such as the omnipresent chain-smoking driver) using video footage and to ensure the recovery of forgotten items, according to the transportation committee.

In addition to the real-time CCTV cameras, which would capture the front and back rows, front passenger-side window and the rear storage box, the smart system will feature a screen to display driver qualifications, GPS navigation and a mobile phone payment terminal, according to China.org.cn

The system will also include an online ride-hailing feature to tap into the ever-growing app-based car hailing industry.

According to the regulation, CCTV footage will be saved for seven days and the privacy of both taxi drivers and passengers will be protected.

A draft of the proposed legislation was released Monday by the Guangzhou Municipal Transportation Committee in order to seek feedback from the public.

If reports are to be believed (which we assume they are), some Guangzhou taxis have already begun using the smart system.
