A new internet star has recently risen in the ranks of Chinese social media: Karl Marx, AKA that influential 17th century scholar dude who wrote The Communist Manifesto. He fell into the Chinese youth popculture spotlight when the song 'Marx is a Post-90s' went viral on social media. According to People's Daily, the hip-hop song was originally written for a television show.
Watch the video below (VPN off):
The song puts Marx's ideas into catchy rap song form, sure to get China's millennials turnt. One line expresses that it's not about the money, money, money but about the belief. Lyrics also focus on his determination and one English line states, 'Cause we won't give up till we die.' We expect this one to get your local KTV room lit.
Some believe that Marx's beliefs are outdated and brainwashing, but People's Daily is having NONE OF THAT. In some pretty over-the-top praise of the video, the state-owned newspaper writes:
Nevertheless, young people tend to have a great spirit for criticism and skepticism, just like Marx in his youth. Young people's sense of justice and responsibility, as well as their desire for freedom, is reflected in many of Karl Marx's beliefs... The song proves that Marx continues to appeal to youth, and will never completely go out of style.
Karl Marx: down with the kids.
