Beijing recorded its first imported case of Zika virus infection on Sunday, The Straits Times reports. The patient is a 29-year-old woman from Shandong, who recently returned to China from Venezuela.

According to a statement released by the capital's health and family planning commission, the patient came down with a fever and developed a skin rash (two common symptoms of the virus) on May 11, while in Venezuela. She returned to China on May 13.

She tested positive for the virus on Sunday, May 15, and is currently in the hospital, where she is being treated.

The commission stated that chances the virus will spread in Beijing are minimal.

The virus is spread by the Aedes mosquito, which is common in tropical areas in the Americas. Zika is known to cause birth defects, such as microcephaly, in newborns.
