The Public Security Bureau in Beijing simplified its visa policy for foreigners in an effort to shorten approval times and make applications easier.
The first change is a new online application system. Foreigners can now apply for a visa, stay permit or residence permit through the Public Security Bureau’s website (Chinese only for now). From there, you'll be able to book an appointment and bring all documents — including a printed out version of your electronic application form — to the PSB's Exit-Entry Bureau on Andingmen Dongdajie. This new method is both easier and quicker than the old system of sending pages of forms to a Chinese embassy.
Although applying for a visa for Beijing has been simplified, foreigners must still follow strict guidelines once they arrive in China, including registering their address at their local police station before they apply.
The second change is a relaxation of the rules surrounding foreign visas. Until now, foreigners always had to obtain a visa before coming to China- a process that could take weeks. Now, they can apply online and get one when they arrive in Beijing. However this policy only applies to those who need to come to China for an emergency, and at the invitation of a Chinese citizen. For normal tourists, the old rule applies.
The Public Security Bureau’s third major change to its visa policies loosens residence permit regulations. Families of Chinese citizens can now stay in Beijing for two years on a permit. Under the previous policy, permits had to be renewed annually. China is also making it easier for foreigners to obtain 10-year-multiple entry visas.
