A new Shenzhen charity wall, known locally as Cheng Ai Qiang, experienced an early snag when ‘dirty’ DVDs and books were left there just days after its inception.
The yellow wall, painted by volunteers on February 28, is located beneath a bridge in Nanshan’s Wenxin Park and features a number of hooks for people to donate clothing or literature they no longer need or want. The idea is that people in need can visit the wall and take items they need free of charge.
Based on a concept first pioneered last winter in Iran, the 'kindness wall' charity concept has spread around the globe, attracting thousands of participants since its Iranian debut.
According to Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, most netizens appear to support the ‘kindness wall,’ although some have pointed out that the donated goods may be hauled away by people that are not in need and simply looking for a free item. Also, as made obvious by this particular incident, the wall also runs the risk of becoming a drop off point of sensitive material.
In response to the pornographic incident, wall organizer Houyuan Dushu Hui stated, “Although it’s necessary to guard the wall, we are a non-profit organization. In the future, we will adjust the Chinese society to make some changes.” (We are unsure what type of “adjustments” the organization is talking about, but we wish them luck on their vague culture-altering mission.)
No word yet on who left the raunchy material, but staff at the porn hub – er – ‘Wall of Kindness’ assured us that it was burnt to a crisp.
