In what has been referred to as “shameful” by Chinese news site Carnoc, a fight between two female Chinese tourists in Tokyo’s Narita International Airport has attracted some negative attention from media, reported the South China Morning Post earlier last week. The fight was instigated when one woman bumped her trolley into another’s, and escalated into a physical altercation which was later broadcasted on Japanese television news.

The question now stands – is this an isolated incident or are Chinese tourists doing a poor job of representing the country when traveling abroad? A bit of research into the subject turns up reports of Chinese tourists urinating in public rather than pay to use public facilities, throwing ramen and threatening to blow up an airplane, producing counterfeit Euro coins in French hotel rooms and instigating brawls in Southeast Asian airports. Enthusiastic “selfie” takers were also in the news last week for causing the death of peacocks at the Yunnan zoo and a dophin on a beach in Argentina. A few tourists have even been “blacklisted” by the Chinese government, which could negatively affect their credit ratings and freedom to travel.
While this latest report on Chinese tourist antics abroad has garnered even more criticism of Chinese etiquette while traveling (or lack thereof), some have rushed to defend. “There are poorly behaved tourists in every country. Considering the numbers travelling for the first time abroad, the number misbehaving is a tiny percentage,” commented “Adamanitunes” on the SCMP article. “It's news because of the things they do when they misbehave but it's wrong to judge the entire population. Rotten apples are exactly that!”
