North Korea Claims to Invent Hangover-Free Alcohol

A rather bizarre claim coming from the Pyongyang Times (via the BBC) yesterday stated that North Korean scientists have invented a “hangover-free alcohol.”

The spirit is reportedly made from a mixture of a type of indigenous ginseng and glutinous rice. This type of ginseng, called Insam, has a very bitter taste. To remove the bitterness, scientists at the Taedonggang Foodstuff Factory replaced the usual sugar with charred, glutinous rice. Despite the drink’s 30-40 percent alcoholic content, replacing sugar with rice supposedly removed its hangover effects.

The national newspaper boasted of the “suave” liquor’s hangover-free qualities, saying that it “exude[d] national flavor” and was “highly appreciated by experts and lovers.” The drink has already been regarded as a “national scientific and technological hit!”

Apparently the Taedonggang Foodstuff Factory has been working on this product for years. Could it be the breakthrough export the newly dubbed "Kim Gin-Un" has been waiting for? Or is it just another outlandish claim so often made about the DPRK's domestic achievements? Who knows, but in the meantime we’ll just wait for them to send a shot our way!

… On second thought, maybe not.
