A recent release from the Hurun Report reveals China as the largest source of the “Richest Self-Made Women in the World” in 2015. Out of the 73 women on the list, 49 of them (including 8 of the top 10) are from China. The US has produced 15 top self-made billionaire women, with the UK holding third place with three women.

According to an article from Shanghai Daily, touchscreen electronics company Lens Technology creator Zhou Qunfei (pictured) takes the title this year as a newcomer to the wealthiest self-made women list, with a personal net worth totaling at RMB50 billion (USD7.8 billion). Originally from Hunan province, Zhou grew up in poverty and became a migrant worker at the age of 15. During this time, she managed to take part-time courses at Shenzhen University and in 1993 established her own touchscreen company, eventually becoming the lead supplier for top tech companies such as Apple and Samsung.

Other top contenders are in the real estate sector, with Chen Lihua, founder of property development company Fuwah International Group at RMB49.5 billion, and Wu Yajun of Longfor Properties with RMB27 billion. This year has seen exponential growth in the success of self-made women worldwide, with China “setting the global benchmark for women in business,” says Rupert Hoogewerf, Hurun’s chairman and chief researcher.
