Back in 2012, before he announced his bid for the presidency by exclaiming, “I beat China all the time” and before he invited Xi Jinping for a Big Mac in lieu of a state dinner, Donald Trump was just a regular billionaire and champion of American manufacturing jobs with his own line of clothing to promote. He made an appearance on David Letterman to endorse Mitt Romney for president, citing the 2012 Republican nominee’s tough stance on China, “a country that’s just ripping our heart out” because “we do nothing to protect ourselves.” Here’s how Letterman responded (VPN required):
