China's fearsome army of grannies known as dama (no, not that dama), usually spotted in herds occupying public parks and pavements with their mass dancing routines, have been wreaking havoc in the capital.
Yesterday morning, "counter-terrorism volunteers" assembled for a souvenir distribution ceremony as a reward for their services keeping the streets of Beijing safe over the course of this week's APEC summit (i.e. knitting on street corners and watching out for "suspicious-looking people").
Police present at the ceremony were reportedly "stupefied" by the surging crowds, many of whom are suspected of not being volunteers at all and just "joining in the fun" when they saw free stuff on offer.
Several of the woman interviewed by Taiwanese ETTV seemed deeply confused about what their job was, what the hours were, and what they were even crowding around to collect.
