Beginning next Monday, 34 new night bus lines will start operating in Beijing, ending an era of shady illegal cabs, bargaining and poorly timed walks.

The new buses will cover 26 main hospitals, 53 universities and colleges, recreation hubs and large residential quarters (Sanliturrr ma?), as well as the Beijing Railway Station and Beijing West Railway Station, which will have either eight or nine buses for service.

The first shuttle bus is expected to start at 11:20pm, and the last one to begin its route at 4:50am, again, conveniently filling the space where subways left us waiting. The interval time will be 30 minutes from 12am to 2am, 40 minutes from 2am to 4am and 20 minutes for all other time periods.

Priced at just RMB1, commuters can enjoy a further 60 percent discount by swiping their blue transportation cards.

Once the new system is in place, the current night bus lines will be cancelled. Which leaves us with the question: what current system?
