Six people were killed after a knife-wielding man launched an attack at a village in Beijing's Huairou District on Thursday, local police said.

Police received a call at 12.48pm and arrived at the scene in Wanghua village, where they arrested the 34 year old suspect, surnamed Zhao. The attack followed a family property dispute, according to the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau.

An unknown number of people were also injured in the attack, and have been taken to hospital.

Police are investigating the incident, which may have been a result of Zhao's reported mental illness.

Fears over security are running high in China after a series of knife attacks on the public have shocked the nation, particularly the Kunming terrorist attack on March 2 which left 29 dead and over 140 injured.
