Driving in Beijing Over National Week? Read These Announcements

Only a couple of days are left until China’s National Week holiday kicks off. Here in Beijing, that means things might be a little different than usual on the roads.

Via their WeChat Official Account, Beijing Traffic Police made a series of key announcements.

So, if you plan on driving in Beijing during the National Week holiday, be sure to read below. 

Road Closures 

From October 1 until October 7, the following roads around Tiananmen Square are closed to motor vehicles which don’t have the necessary permit:

Guangchang Xice Lu (广场西侧路) and Guangchang Dongce Lu (广场东侧路)

Commuters can take Renmin Dahuitang Xi Lu (人民大会堂西路) and Zhengyi Lu (正义路) as alternate routes. 

From October 1 until October 7, the following road around the Fragrant Hills area is closed between 7am-7pm to motor vehicles which don’t have the necessary permit:

Nanxin Cun Jie (南辛村街) (closed east to west from Xiangshan Nan Lu (香山南路) to Hongfeng Lu (红枫路))

Expect Heavier Traffic Tomorrow Evening

Peak traffic time during tomorrow evening (September 30) is expected to last until around 8pm. 

Expect Heavier Traffic During The Holiday Period

Between 5.30-8pm, expect to see heavy traffic on the following roads, highways and expressways in the direction away from Beijing city center: 

Roads

Second ring road (east, west and north sections), fourth ring road, fifth ring road (west section), Fengti Nan Lu (丰体南路), Jianwai Da Jie (建外大街), Tonghui He Bei Lu (通惠河北路) and Lianshi Dong Lu (莲石东路)

Highways and Expressways

Jingzang (京藏) Highway, Jingcheng (京承) Highway, Jingtong (京通) Expressway, Jing Gang Ao (京港澳) Highway and Jichang (机场) Highway

Highways

During National Week holiday, expect traffic on the following highways to be busy going out of Beijing in the morning and entering Beijing in the afternoon: 

Jingzang (京藏), Jingcheng (京承), Jichang (机场), Jing Gang Ao (京港澳), Jingkai (京开), Jinghu (京沪) and Jingha (京哈)

Traffic is expected be especially busy going out of Beijing in the mornings between October 1-October 3, and entering Beijing in the afternoons between October 5-October 7. 

Tourist Attractions and Scenic Spots 

Expect traffic to be heavy around the following areas: 

  • Fragrant Hills 

  • Botanical Gardens

  • Tiananmen Square

  • Forbidden City

  • Badachu Park

  • New Summer Palace 

  • Beijing Zoo

  • Yuyuantan Park

  • Temple of Heaven 

  • Shidu Scenic Area

  • Zhoukoudian Pofengling

  • Grand Canal Forest Park (Tongzhou district)

  • The Ming Tombs

  • Badaling Great Wall

  • Miyun Reservoir 

  • Gubei Water Town

  • Heilongtan Scenic Area

  • Daxing Wildlife Park

  • Happy Valley

  • Universal Beijing Resort 

  • Yanqing Baili Hualang Scenic Area

  • Shilinxia Scenic Area (Pinggu district)

  • Jinhai Lake 

The following areas holding special events are expected to see heavy traffic on nearby roads: 

  • Temple of Heaven 

  • Beihai Park

  • International Flower Port Beijing

  • Beijing World Flower Wonderland Park

  • Happy Valley

  • Universal Beijing Resort 

  • Olympic Forest Park

  • Badaling Great Wall

  • Julongguan Great Wall

  • Yanxi Lake

  • Beijing Sea World

For those heading to the Beijing suburbs, expect traffic to be slow on the following routes:

In case you didn’t know already, National Week holiday is from October 1 until October 7. Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9 are scheduled as work days. 

Make sure to plan any journeys in advance.
