Yesterday, Airport Council International released a list ranking the top 20 busiest airports in the world according to total passenger traffic.

Among the top 20: China’s Beijing Capital International ranking at No. 2, Hong Kong International at No. 8, Shanghai Pudong International at No. 9 and Guangzhou Baiyun International at No. 13.

With a rapidly growing market for travel to the Asia Pacific region, this should come as no surprise. By 2036, passenger numbers could potentially rise to 3.5 billion, an estimate by the International Air Transport Association, as reported by Bloomberg.

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport was reported to be the second fastest growing airport on the list, after India’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, with a 10.3 percent increase in passenger traffic, bumping it up from No. 15 since last year.

Coming in at No. 1, yet again, was Harstfield-Jackson Atlanta International in the United States.

John F. Kennedy International Airport, the primary international airport in New York City, no longer made the cut, dropping down to No. 22. This is reportedly the first time in three years, according to amNewYork.

Other key notes from the ACI’s findings show that passenger traffic at Tianjin's airport increased by 25 percent since last year, with Nanjing following at 15.5 percent and Xi'an by 13 percent.
