Beijing Police Dispatch Robots to Crack Down on Traffic Violators

Robots may be the wave of the future for traffic police in the capital. The Beijing police department tested out a new highway patrol robot on the Airport Expressway on Monday, Xinhua reports. And it appears to have been a success.

The robot was able to detect all sorts of traffic violations, from illegally parked cars to vehicles driving in the emergency lane.

The robot was attached to the highway’s guardrail and was able to move back and forth along the rail at a speed of 5 km/h. Its built-in camera shot photos and videos of any vehicle that drove over the traffic line. It then sent real-time images to police officers’ smartphones using 4G. Police would then determine whether or not the motorist was operating illegally.

Because the robot only weighs 20 kg, it can easily be carried by one person and can be transported to any area in which an officer might need assistance.

The robot is also able to help in the case of traffic accidents by taking photos of the incident and transmitting them to police officers. It can also alert drivers about heavy traffic, accidents and poor driving conditions via sound a light alarms.

Beijing police aim to dispatch these highway patrol robot officers on more highways around the city soon.
