A tear-filled memorial service was held for Cheick Tioté on Tuesday following the former Newcastle and Ivory Coast midfielder’s untimely and unexpected death on June 5.

Tioté, who joined Beijing Enterprises earlier this year, died suddenly after collapsing on the pitch during practice earlier this month. He was immediately taken to a local hospital but was pronounced dead an hour later. Tioté was only 30 years old.

Friends, family and teammates attended Tuesday’s service in order to pay their respects to Tioté. Former Newcastle teammate and current Shandong Luneng player Papiss Cisse also attended the emotional ceremony.

“I lived some extraordinary moments with this man and today he's gone,” Cisse said.

A private service will soon be held for Tioté in Ivory Coast. Tioté’s body was scheduled to be flown from Beijing to his home country today.
