A Chinese man is being called a hero after he successfully restrained a ballistic passenger who threatened to crash a plane flying from Ethiopia to Beijing, Ecns.com reports.
The incident occurred on flight ET604, which was traveling from Addis Ababa to the Chinese capital on March 18. The flight was midair when a passenger named Cao Hongguo heard a stewardess calling for help. He rushed to the scene and found a belligerent man banging on the cockpit door, attempting to get in.
Airline employees attempted to calm the man down but weren’t successful. When Cao saw the man, he immediately tackled him and struck him down. With the help of two other passengers, Cao was able to restrain the man using earphone wires 20 minutes later. The plane made an emergency landing at Lahore Airport in Pakistan shortly after.
The suspect was reportedly angry because he had recently been fired, and he had threatened to take the plane, and its 200 passengers, down with him.
Cao, who suffered minor injuries to his face during the encounter, is now being hailed as a hero for his actions. The captain of the plane even wrote a letter thanking Cao and explaining to his boss why Cao was late for work.
"Anyone who encounters this would do the same," the humble Cao said on Sunday.
