Since the start of the National Day holiday on Saturday, the air pollution levels have been less than optimal in Beijing. And things took a turn for the worse on Monday. This morning, China’s national observatory issued a yellow smog alert – the third-highest in the system, South China Morning Post reports.

Smog is currently enveloping the capital, Hebei and the northwestern portion of Shaanxi. Moderate to heavy smog is expected to linger in these areas until Tuesday morning. According to the National Meteorological Centre, a cold snap will arrive in Beijing tonight to help disperse the smog.
