A chance to know yourself in a better way
In his book Steppenwolf, Hermann Hesse describes man’s struggle between beastly Intensität (intensity) and human affection. The novel’s hero agonizes over whether to adhere to the civilized customs of man or acquiesce to his own darkness. In weighing two versions of self, he feels inner dissonance -- as if he’s being asked to wear a different face in public than the one he wears most naturally, alone. How do we create the “face” we show to the world around us? How much of the process do we control and how much is up to others to interpret?
This project asks that question of its participants -- encouraging them to manifest their inner self through a public show of artistic expression. By adding to the “face” the rest of the world already sees, each participant has a chance to showcase who he or she really is.
