Here are all the major international movies to catch in Chinese theaters this January.*


Dec 28: Thugs of Hindostan

This film packed with emotion and action is the most expensive Bollywood flick of all time. It is set in the 18th century and follows Khudabaksh Azaad as he leads a band of thugs in the hopes of liberating the Indian subcontinent Hindostan from British East India Company rule. Troubles arise when the English call on a talented con artist, Firangi Mallah, to infiltrate the gang.

Jan 4: Bumblebee

The sixth installment of the Transformers series, Bumblebee revolves around the giant yellow autobot that’s been sent to save the earth and his own species. Alongside his new human counterpart Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld), the two must protect each other from a secret government operation hell-bent on disarming the heroic robot and the misleading Decepticons in an action-packed sci-fi film directed by Michael Bay.

Jan 4: Creed 2

This boxing epic is the eighth installment of the Rocky series and the sequel to the critically acclaimed Creed (2015). Heavyweight champ Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) struggles to balance his personal life and work as he prepares for his next big match. Adonis’s opponent’s grim connection to his family’s past makes this upcoming duel even more challenging. Together with his coach and mentor Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), Adonis must face his past and question what is worth fighting for.

Jan 11: The Breadwinner

This Academy Award-nominated animated film is based on the best selling novel from Deborah Ellis. An Afghani girl living under Taliban rule, 11-year-old Parvana must pretend to be a boy to provide for her family after her father is unjustly taken from their home. The emotionally challenging film tells a story of struggle and survival as a young girl navigates a world ruled by adult men to support her loved ones and rescue her father.

Jan 25: Dead Pigs

This visually stunning, satiric comedy-drama film directed by Cathy Yan won the ‘World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble Acting’ at Sundance Film Festival. Based on true events, it tells the story of how the lives of a bumbling pig farmer, a feisty salon owner, a sensitive busboy, an expat architect and a disenchanted rich girl collide as 10,000 dead pigs are floating down the Huangpu river towards a rapidly modernizing Shanghai.

Jan 27: The Mystery of Dragon Seal: The Journey to China

Featuring adventure, action, fantasy, Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger, this film tells the story of an English traveler and cartographer who receives an order from Peter the Great to map the Russian Far East. He sets out on an incredible journey that will lead him to breathtaking discoveries, magical creatures, Chinese princesses, martial arts masters and the infamous Dragon King.
