Sixty kilometers south of Tianjin stand what’s left of the Dagu Forts (otherwise known as the "Taku Forts"), built in 1816 to protect Beijing – which, in 1860, they spectacularly failed to do. Most of the emplacements were subsequently chai’ed by the capitalist imperialists, leaving only the 65-ft Wei and Hai Forts, some fake cannons and – a little later, of course – the Dagu Fort Ruins Museum (est. 1997) and Monument. You can also take a look at the Haimen Bridge, Dagu Beacon, and Chaoyin Temple nearby. As a symbol of propaganda against the West, the Dagu Forts are one of the “three treasures” of Tianjin.
