Reopened this October, Captain’s Bar continues to be one of the most romantic spots on the Shenzhen drinking circuit. Located on the Shekou marina, it provides cinematic views of the harbor as well as a peaceful atmosphere. Shekou locals and expats alike flock to the extensive outdoor seating area with a special someone or their raucous Chinese business parties.
Decorated with sturdy wooden seats and white umbrellas, the terrace is the first choice for most patrons. A cool, gentle sea breeze rolls through, like one is on the deck of a ship. Be warned, however, that dining outdoors entails some second-hand smoke from fellow patrons. For a cozier spot, venture upstairs to the dimly lit lounge with overstuffed brown couches and a bit of a first-mate’s-quarters vibe.
Much the same as other bars in town, the drink menu offers cocktails, wines and whisky. For something befitting the environment, try the Sea Breeze (RMB46). Refreshing cranberry juice and tangy grapefruit juice come well mixed with vodka that can only be barely detected. Other cocktails and martinis are priced reasonably at RMB42-46.
Imported beers grace the menu, from Scotland’s BrewDog Punk IPA (RMB40) to Belgium’s La Chouffe (RMB45). According to the manager, the bestseller at Captain’s is Vedett Extra White (RMB45/large, RMB32/small), which has a creamy mouthfeel with a light lemon taste.
For seafaring sustenance, order the Italian bruschetta (RMB42) to start. The fresh tomato salad atop soft white baguette slices will stave off the hunger until you reach shore – or until you get an entree. After a long day at sea (or a long trek down the Shekou subway line to get here), reward yourself with a tandoor-roasted chicken (RMB118/whole, RMB76/half). Well seasoned, it comes complete with mixed salad, french fries and mayonnaise.
Despite their friendliness, the staff are slow on the water refills – one hour slow, making us wonder if they’ve misinterpreted the meaning of ‘wait staff.’
