Climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution have increasingly visible impacts on our daily lives. The ecological crisis compels us to redefine our relationship with the world.

The challenges are diverse and require a multidisciplinary approach. We must learn to live "differently" to embark on a more sustainable path and embrace a shared future. As French anthropologist and sociologist Bruno Latour wrote 15 years ago, "The ecological crisis compels us to reconstruct all aspects of our lifestyles, down to the smallest details, such as the fibers of our clothing, the exhaust pipes of our cars, and the windows of our homes... A revolution of prudence and care..."

Although the challenges are unprecedented, each of us can contribute. The 2023 Sino-French Month of Environment focuses on "A Different Way of Life," aiming to explore the possibilities of rebuilding our lifestyles with the public.

On October 14, the 10th Sino-French Month of Environment in South China officially kicked off at Shuter Life, located within the Haizhu Lake Park. Following a welcoming address by Chen Huixuan, General Manager of Shuter Life, Benjamin MARTINEZ, Deputy Consul General of France in Guangzhou, delivered a speech.

"When we acquire more knowledge about environmental protection, we realize that many easily achievable actions can effectively reduce environmental harm. For example, reducing food waste, minimizing the use of disposable products, practicing rational consumption, recycling, reducing air conditioning usage, and adopting green transportation – as long as we maintain an environmentally conscious mindset, 'A Different Way of Life' is actually not a difficult choice in our daily lives."

This year's Month of Environment focuses on various aspects of daily life, from diet to clothing, from consumption patterns to the relationship between humans and the environment. Throughout October, a series of popular science lectures, exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, and tours will unfold across the South China region.

For the 10th edition of the Sino-French Month of Environment, numerous public events will be organized throughout China. They will help everyone better understand the challenges of redefining our lifestyles. During the entire month of October, South China will host scientific conferences, exhibitions, screenings, workshops, and guided tours.
