A year after McCawley’s in Futian closed, the remaining two locations both closed last week as well.
McCawley’s Peninsula shut a few days before the Sea World location closed on June 29.
The Irish pubs were regular spots for expats and locals looking for a good pint and bar fare, as well as places to watch sports and listen to live music.
Additionally, TakeOut Comedy’s open mic nights were hosted weekly at McCawley’s. We reached out to the organizer, Mr. Ryan for his thoughts:
“Honestly speaking, TakeOut Comedy is very sad the see McCawley’s close down. As with everyone else, hearing news of its closure was a shock for us too. We’ve been doing stand-up comedy at that location for nearly three years. Our comics and audiences have so many memories in that place. Comedy nights at McCawley’s were always a great place to relax, have fun and meet new friends. It was the perfect room for comedy. Even though they are closed, we thank the staff for being such good hosts for us over the years.”
A long-standing establishment, the Sea World location opened in 2003, while the Futian location opened in 2009.
The McCawley’s Group portfolio once consisted of McCawley’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, Tequila Coyote Cantina and The Butcher Shop with locations in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan.
With McCawley’s gone, it looks like George & Dragon or Gecko are frontrunners for pub shenanigans if you’re in the Sea World area.
