Brooklyn-born artist JM Rizzi’s colorful abstract expressionist pieces can now be found at Raffles City in Nanshan district. Currently based in Dallas, the artist (also known as JMR) is well-known for his “energetic compositions of simple forms, line and ecstatic color.” His work can be found all around the globe, in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Hong Kong, Shanghai and now Shenzhen.
So how does one begin to undertake a huge art installation? Rizzi shares with us that he first created two pieces of artwork which were drawn on paper with ink, which were later digitally enhanced. The pieces are titled ‘On the Corner’ and ‘Blue Haze’ after Miles Davis songs, an acclaimed figure in the history of jazz. Rizzi tells us,
“He represents, for me, a quintessential NYC musician. Capturing the movement, culture, bustle and flow of the city. In this same way, these works of art look to convey the same emotions. The compositions take on an orchestral dimension, with overlays of color and line work, that mimic the energy of urban life. This energy, that has a youthful spirit, can be used to overcome adversities of all kinds.”
Although Rizzi is currently in the US, he has been to China multiple times, mostly to Hong Kong, and was also fortunate enough to travel to Chengdu in 2018. The installation will be up until December, so make sure to check it out next time you’re there.
