Good news Line 2 and 3 metro riders of Shenzhen! Weekend hours on these metro lines will be extended starting this Saturday, June 29. Shenzhen Metro announced via their official Weibo account that waiting times during peak intervals will be shortened by more than 20 seconds and first and last bus times will be adjusted accordingly.

On Line 2, train operation during peak hours will be stretched from seven to 11 hours, with the new window being 8.53am-7.45pm. This means that during this time period more trains will be added to cut down on waiting times. Similarly, Line 3’s peak hours of operation will be increased to 12 hours. With this new peak metro hours adjustment, new waiting times will be four minutes and 30 seconds on Line 2 and three minutes 30 seconds on Line 3.

For those trekking back to Futian after a boozy night at Sea World on the weekends, it looks like the last train you can catch is still at 11.04pm. However, if you’re heading in the opposite direction to Chiwan, then you’re in luck: the last train has been extended by eight minutes (four more minutes than Madonna and Justin Timberlake needed to ‘save the world’).

Shenzhen has also followed Beijing and Shanghai’s footsteps in implementing a halfway train on Line 3 on the weekend. After the last train, there is a halfway train from Yitian to Tangkeng Metro Station and another from Shuanglong to Huaxin Metro Station that will both be extended for 30 minutes.

New operating hours for Line 2 and Line 3 are as follows:

  • Line 2: Xinxiu to Chiwan: 6.30am-11.08pm

  • Line 2: Chiwan to Xinxiu: 6.14am-11pm

  • Line 3: Shuanglong to Yitian: 6.20-12:27am (last stop Huaxin)

  • Line 3: Yitian to Shuanglong: 6.20-12:17am (last stop Tangkeng)

This new initiative is in response to the increased volume of riders that the Shenzhen metro has experienced on the weekends. Riders heading in and out of the Futian Railway Station, which intersects with both Line 2 and 3, hopefully won’t have to rush anymore with the new extended operating hours!
