That’s Shenzhen takes a look at the best of the week:

The Key welcomes owner, and bartender extraordinaire Luca Cinalli, formerly of Nightjar and Oriole in London, as he returns to Shenzhen for a few evenings behind the bar. Starting at 8pm, the folks at Book Exchange Library will hold a short talk on the fictional ‘Chinese’ super-villain Dr. Fu Manchu. Once the popular creation of British author Arthur Ward (aka Sax Rohmer), Fu has since become infamous for representing early 20th-century Western stereotypes about China. In addition, the library will be open for checkouts and returns for the duration of the event, which ends at 9pm.
Wed Feb 20, 7-9pm; free entry. Shuiwei Community Service Center. See event listing.
Fri, Feb 22: Lillies and Remains

One of the leading lights in Tokyo’s post punk/nu wave scene, Lillies and Remains are a silver lining to Shenzhen’s lackluster music showing in the month of February. For an introductory example to their sound, have a listen to their dark, baritone take on The Smiths’ ‘Some Girls are Bigger than Others.’ They occupy the space between Echo and the Bunnymen’s melodic post punk and the electric pop of Depeche Mode.
Fri Feb 22, 8.30pm; RMB90 presale, RMB120 at the door. B10. See event listing. Tickets.
Fri, Feb 22: Shenzhen Symphony - Sammy de Mestre

Mambo are stepping up their game in terms of events. This latest sees them invite a number of local comedians from the Shenzhen/Hong Kong area to perform for an audience at their restaurant in Shuiwei. Few in recent years have emerged within London’s music underground from a place of such pungency and credibility as DEBONAIR. The DJ and radio host is regarded as one of the hardest digging selectors in the scene with a formidable knowledge of postpunk, new wave, EBM, proto techno, electro, italo disco and off-kilter house. She will deliver these exquisitely during her incendiary DJ sets at Oil this Saturday.
Sat Feb 23, 10pm; RMB100 presale, RMB120 at the door. Oil. See event listing. Tickets.
