For almost a month, a woman, surnamed Fan, puzzled over the death of her canine companion in Shenzhen. Now, she finally knows the cause for her dog's untimely death.

On January 5, a man was caught attempting to poison dogs by placing poisonous bait around a residential community in Nanshan, according to Southern Metropolis Daily.

The incident took place at Longhai Jiayuan in Nanshan District, where the man was seen walking around the area with a plastic bag in his hand and placing poisoned sausages around the neighborhood’s flowerbed. He has been detained by local police.

According to Shenzhen News Network, the man had been trying to poison dogs in this area since October of last year and his efforts had already resulted in the death of a number of dogs.

“I am afraid of dogs and I just feel like poisoning them,” the perpetrator said, according to a local security guard who caught him in the act.

Southern Metropolis Daily revealed that the poison the man was using is a type of antibiotic called isoniazid, which is used for the treatment of tuberculosis. The drug is considered poisonous to cats and dogs.

This is nothing new for Shenzhen, as there have previously been cases of people trying to harm dogs by enclosing fishhooks within food before planting the harmful bait. These traps were spotted in August of last year in a number of areas in Futian District, including Yitian village and Xiameilin, with at least one dog being seriously harmed.

Attitudes to dog owners in Shenzhen have become increasingly hostile. Netizens commenting under a Weibo post with the news have generally been critical of irresponsible dog owners.

“Walking dogs without a leash or a muzzle and leaving dog excrement all over the place – that is even more detestable! This is the only way to make them realize that!” Commented one Weibo user.
