Jan 4: Kotaro Oshio

Acoustic guitarist Kotaro Oshio has built a reputation on the back of his excellent finger picking and a unique playing technique called 'nail attack.' Much loved in Japan for his beautiful musicianship, Oshio has shared a stage with such legends as BB King. He comes to China to take part in a broad tour of the country.

Jan 5: Samajam

Attendees at this fantastic show will receive tambourines, drumsticks and musical tubes, as the showrunners present a unique and inclusive opportunity for kids to learn about music and rhythm. The recommended age for kids attending is 3 years old and up.

Jan 6: Island Mood

Having formed in Xi’an all the way back in 2007, Island Mood set out initially to channel the inner ‘island’ or mood that they perceive to be locked away inside every person. Their music is slow, introspective and rhythmic with strong vocals from frontman Liu Bo.

Jan 9: Chai

Dumpling aficionados and 'neo-Kawaii-ists,' Chai are taking their rebellious punk rock on the road this January. Their mission statement is to show the other side of Japanese cuteness and culture, and their music reflects an affection for early noughties punk bands like Le Tigre. Catch their synchronized dancing and offbeat covers at B10 this month.

Jan 9: UK Alumni New Year Gathering

For all the UK citizens not heading home this festive season, why not drop by Morton’s Grille for an enjoyable evening meeting and greeting with fellow Britons. Featuring fun games, speeches and lots of opportunities to network, this should be a lovely evening.

Jan 12: Hospitality

Unchained are presenting another fantastic event this January as they invite much adored drum and bass label Hospital Records to Oil. With big-name artists like Danny Byrd and Logistics making appearances, along with a number of local and China-based acts, this should be an evening to remember.

Jan 12: The Sound of Q-Dance

Q-Dance is one of the premiere hardstyle event organizers in the world, famous for their wildly popular Qlimax in The Netherlands each year. This time they have teamed up with SHOCK to bring another amazing event, The Sound of Q-Dance, to Shenzhen on January 12.

Jan 12: Goodbye Romance

Say goodbye to romance with heartbreakingly good bands like The Sulis Club and Blaster this January at Hou Live. Gathering a group of romantically defined folk, indie and rock bands for one night only, this festival will showcase some of the most enjoyable lovelorn acts in Greater China.

Jan 19: Space Station

We’ve heard a lot about Black Deer Records in the past year, with rising acts like Nouvelle and Echo Park taking much of the plaudits. Here we see one of the most prominent acts from the Guangzhou-based independent label take to the stage at Hou Live. Space Station are an experimental instrumental act bound to knock your socks right off your feet and, perhaps, send you into orbit.

Jan 19: Nick Warren

A legend of UK electronic, Nick Warren made a name for himself DJing for Massive Attack, for being one half of duo Way Out West and for taking part in a number of the legendary Global Underground series of releases. A legend of the game, Warren’s appearance in Oil is another coup by the brilliant promoters.

Jan 23: Within the Ruins

Going strong now for 15 years, Within the Ruins are classified along a range of different genres, such as nuclear metal and deadcore, among others. While it may be hard to pinpoint their exact musical origins, their hardcore, bone-shaking sets make for a unique and interesting viewing experience for hardcore fans out there.

Jan 25-27: The Murder of Hanging Garden

Another of Meng Jinhui’s fabulous dramas comes to Shenzhen, with this insidious piece focusing on the topic of murder. Again, this play shows off Meng’s great sense for Russian tragedy, psychological mystery and the sometimes ludicrous nature of humanity.

Jan 25-28: Mozart, l’opera rock

The grandmaster of classical music, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, gets a modern update courtesy of this French musical. Combining rock ’n’ roll, and the Austrian’s original tunes, this stage-piece takes the spectator through the composer’s life, teasing out the many complex experiences that fed into Mozart’s beautiful music ventures.

Jan 26-28: Arduino Madness & Wearables

Learn how to create your own tech wearables with Arduino this January. The open-source hardware organization will teach all comers some basics of circuit design and hardware, while also making the event fun and interesting for those with no background in hardware.

Until April 15: Hello, My Name is Paul Smith

British designer Paul Smith is renowned for his creative spirit, which combines tradition and modernity. Famous for clothing and accessories collections, Paul Smith specializes in an inventive use of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge design to create beautifully made, desirable and modern pieces. The Design Museum London brings this touring exhibition to Shenzhen until April 15.

Until March 10: The 4th Shenzhen Independent Animation Biennale: Expanded Animation

With an aim to provoke thoughts on the connection between creation and reality, as well as to initiate discussions on the artistic boundaries for future animation, this event will showcase artwork that blends culture, technology, art and life together in unique and harmonious ways.

Until March 8: Despicable Me: A Minion’s Perspective

Looking to get your kids interested in art, there may be no better event for the young ones than this Minion-oriented installation at OCT Harbour this month. With interactive pieces and fun installations based directly on the Despicable Me franchise, this one is a must for an enjoyable day out with the family.

Until March 24: National Geographic: A New Age of Exploration

Bless Design Society for bringing one of the more exciting exhibitions that we have seen in a while to their base in Sea World Culture and Arts Center. Here, the famed global magazine will present visitors with an exploration of their history, looking at such interesting things as the magazine’s first outdoor photograph, as well as their reporting of the grand human migration to Mecca, which occurs every year.

Thu, Ongoing: Trivia Night at Craft Head

Getting right back into the thick of things after their return with a new physical location in Xinzhou Village, Craft Head presents a new quiz night every Thursday at 8.30pm. With three prizes given away each round to the top three teams, Thursdays are about to get a little more boozy.
