In our monthly series 'Getting Moderately Deep With... ' we ask a food vendor tough questions. Well, sort-of tough.
This month we meet Mr. Gao, the owner of a Mongolian beef jerky shop.
What is your idea of the perfect day?
The perfect day for me is when my productssell a lot and when I'm blessed with a bit of luck.
What is the first thing you thought when you woke up this morning?
That I had to go to work.
Who is your best customer?
Everyone! [blushes]
Who was your worst customer to date?
Nah, I don’t think I’ve had any.
How are you feeling today?
Very good actually, I’m in a great mood.
When and where were you happiest?
Anytime I’m spending time with my family, but I’d say Chinese New Year is always the best of all.
Which talent would you most like to possess?
I’d like to be able to fly, because then I could travel to Yunnan – which is my favorite place to visit, but for free! [laughs] Yeah, that’s how much I love to travel.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Don’t think I've had that yet.
If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?
I’d like to change some of my bad habits like smoking and drinking. I feel guilty about smoking every day…
What is your most treasured possession?
Health. Without it, I couldn't do anything.
What trait do you most value in a person?
Kindness. If one possesses it, I wouldn’t feel insecure being around him or her.
What is it that you most dislike?
Rainy days, they just give me such gloomy vibes. I guess the same goes for cloudy days.
What’s your motto?
“Miracles are another word for effort.”
What always makes you laugh?
When things that make me happy happen, like good sales. That always makes me laugh [smirks].
Which era of Beijing's history would you most like to have lived in?
Ming and Qing but perhaps Qing more, because my ancestors used to work for the Qing government.
Who is your hero?
Mao Zedong, for sure. I mean, he’s our hero... He founded China!
You can try Mr. Gao’s beef jerky at his shop in Beijing at 35 Xiaoyun Road, Chaoyang 朝阳区霄云路35号
