Shenzhen Metro to Take Crowd-Control Measures During Light Show

The 40th Anniversary of Opening Up light show officially kicked off in Shenzhen on September 28, and as expected, large crowds of spectators have been turning out in force.

According to Shenzhen Daily, the light show attracted a total of 1.12 million visitors by October 6, nine days after its debut, with the number of nightly visitors reaching a record high of 218,000 on October 1.

With two performances at 8pm and 9pm every night from Sunday to Thursday and three performances on Fridays, Saturdays and on national holidays, the show certainly adds a little bit of color to Shenzhen's skyline. That comes with a hefty, but not unfamiliar, price however.

In order to combat overcrowding, Shenzhen Traffic Police and Shenzhen Metro have announced a series of measures to prevent traffic congestion in and around Shenzhen Civic Center, where the light show takes place.

Expecting huge crowds to clog the underground system, Shenzhen Metro announced that every night between 7pm and 10pm crowd-control measures will be implemented across nine nearby metro stations based on the scale of the crowds.

The affected metro stations will see specific exits shut temporarily during the light show. Children’s Palace, Civic Center and Convention & Exhibition Center on Line 4; Futian, Lianhua West and Gangxia North on Line 2; Shopping Park and Gangxia on Line 1; and Lianhuacun on Line 3 are all within the traffic radius of the light show and are expected to experience heavy crowds.

Meanwhile, the Shenzhen Traffic Police announced that road traffic control measures will also be implemented during the event. The area surrounding the Civic Center has been divided into three sectors, including the core traffic sector (shown in red below, and likely to experience the most significant delays), the traffic control sector (shown in yellow) and the traffic diversion sector (roads in blue and under Class III control).

In addition, the Hongli-Shennan section of Yitian Lu and the Hongli-Shennan section of Fuhua San Lu, within the red sector on the map below, will be closed while light performances are underway.

According to a public notice on the Shenzhen Traffic Police website, the underground car park at the Civic Center will also be closed to the public. Traffic patrolmen and patrol cameras will be onsite to monitor any traffic violations.
