That's Shenzhen takes a look at the best live music shows this weekend.

Fri, Sept 14: Jahwahzoo @ Brown Sugar Jar (Shekou)

Chengdu reggae collective Jahwahzoo bring their tropical vibes down south this weekend. This group of seven talented musicians take inspiration from the Jamaican musical form while also splashing in some of their own flavor with Chinese lyrics. As China’s music industry continues to grow, so too does the appearance of bands affiliated with this niche genre. Catch the band playing tracks from their latest album, Zoo Party, this weekend.

Fri Sept 14, 8.30pm; RMB80 presale, RMB100 at the door. Brown Sugar Jar. Tickets.

Fri, Sept 14: Suicideyear @ Oil Club

Armed with a vicious drum machine reminiscent of British duo Mount Kimbie, Suicideyear will warm up for his appearance at Shanghai’s Concrete & Grass Festival at Oil this weekend. With roots in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and currently based out of New Orleans, Suicideyear takes inspiration for his beats from Southern US hip hop. Previous collaborations with Yung Lean and Georgia saw his star rise, and his latest album, Color the World, brought together many of the most enjoyable aspects of his unique style.

Fri Sept 14, 10pm. RMB60 presale, RMB80 at the door. Oil Club. Tickets.

Sat, Sept 15: Thin City新城 & Lips McKenzie Tribute to Talking Heads @ Brown Sugar Jar

Local independent bands Thin City新城 and Lips McKenzie will share the stage this weekend to pay tribute to legendary New York punk and new wave group Talking Heads. With the band’s seminal album, Stop Making Sense, the focal point, expect to see covers of such hits as ‘Psycho Killer,’ ‘Burning Down the House’ and ‘Once in a Lifetime.’ This special performance should act as a good introduction to Talking Heads, or simply a lovely reinvention of their best known songs by two great indie bands.

Sat Sept 15, 8.30pm; RMB50 presale, RMB50 at the door. Brown Sugar Jar. Tickets.

Sat, Sept 15: Yahyel @ Hou Live

One of Japan’s best-loved dream pop bands Yahyel arrive in town this weekend with their latest album, Human, in tow. Yahyel are another act warming up for a spot on Concrete & Grass’s illustrious line-up this year, so expect an energetic set by the five-piece. Having been compared to James Blake by organizers of the festival, this is one band that you will definitely want to see up close and personal.

Sat Sept 15, 8.30pm; RMB150 presale, RMB180 at the door. Hou Live. Tickets.

Sat, Sept 15: Abyss X @ Oil Club

Abyss X’s mysterious masked visage channels her avant-garde approach to music. While, at times, similar to another outspoken electronic artist, FKA Twigs, Abyss X takes influence from a swathe of different music genres, such as pop, grime and RnB. She is joined on the evening by Ziur, another fantastic experimental club musician. Ziur’s best known works have combined pieces of Dev Hynes’ Blood Orange project, Samantha Urbani and MicahTron. Don’t miss the opportunity to catch this formidable duo.

Sat Sept 15, 10pm. RMB80 presale, RMB100 at the door. Oil Club. Tickets.
