Bars in Shenzhen to Get X-Ray Scanners, Security Guards

Shenzhen’s bar scene may soon see drastic changes, following a series of new rules.

The most expensive of the new requirements is the call for metal detectors and micrometer X-ray scanners at the main entrance, as well as full-time security guards (at least one male and one female) posted at other points of entry.

As first reported by Shekou Daily, “according to the police officers, [the notice] was handed down from above and [the rules] are meant for all bars in the city, no matter their size.” That initial report confirmed only that bars along Hai Chang Street, near Shekou’s Sea World neighborhood, had received the notice with August 27 set as the deadline for compliance.

Bars in Shuiwei and other parts of Shenzhen tell That’s they have not received any notice about these rules.

However, That’s did confirm that Bionic Brew, located further east in Nanshan’s Bashizhou village, was visited by law enforcement officers bearing the same notice. "They came to the bar and gave me a form that I was expected to sign," the manager tells us. "There was no translator present and the only two restaurants they approached on our food street were us and our neighbor [Peko], which are each foreign operated/owned."

As the new rules apply to bars and Bionic is licensed as a restaurant, no immediate changes are planned.

"We will change our signage a little to ensure our restaurant status is clear," he explains, "but outside of that there isn't much we can do."

No word yet from other bars, but we’ll keep you posted.
