Qiaoxiang Lu in Futian and Nanshan districts will become Shenzhen’s first ‘smart road,’ and is expected to be fully renovated by early 2019.
The road will use new-generation technology such as AI and big data to improve operation, with capabilities such as better road condition monitoring as well as being autonomous car-friendly, reports Global Times.
Although details on some features are lacking, the road will reportedly be equipped with smart traffic lights that automatically adjust signals based on real-time information about pedestrian and vehicle flow.
The smart road will also be fitted with lampposts holding screens that display bus information and community maps. In addition, the lampposts will double as monitoring cameras, and will transmit free-to-use Wi-Fi in busy pedestrian areas.

Cameras installed on 12 intersections of the smart road will be capable of capturing traffic violations, such as passengers who fail to use seatbelts and vehicles that don’t stop for pedestrians and other drivers.
The entrance of Beihuan Boulevard will be able to detect the weight and speed of vehicles, with the data being sent to a monitoring center. This data will help law enforcement to punish vehicles violating the law with offenses such as overloading, speeding and spilling.
While growing implementation of smart cameras and facial recognition technology across China may raise questions about privacy, Shenzhen's first smart street also promises to curb unsafe behavior on the road.
