Yesterday morning, Hong Kong police arrested a South Korean man on suspicion of murdering his spouse and 6-year-old son, the South China Morning Post reported.

The family were staying in The Ritz-Carlton, a luxury hotel on the top floors of Hong Kong's International Commerce Centre skyscraper. According to SCMP sources, the couple had previously had a disagreement.

Police were alerted to the suspected crime after the man called a friend in South Korea at around 7am to say that the family were going to commit suicide. His friend reported the call to Korean police, who then conveyed the tip to the South Korean consulate in Hong Kong.

Local police arrived at the family's hotel suite to find the man's wife and child already deceased, with "slash wounds on their necks." A 13-centimeter-long knife was also discovered at the scene.

At the time of arrest, the suspect was 'semi-conscious' and wearing only underwear. Assistant district police commander Chan Tsz-leung told the SCMP that the man had minor cuts on his fingers and face, and was not in a fit state for questioning. He was sent to a hospital after his arrest.

According to Chan, there was "no sign of an intense struggle" in the suite. It's currently unclear whether the suspect's wife and son were already dead at the time he called his friend.

The family first arrived in Hong Kong on January 6, and made a trip to Macau at one point. They checked into The Ritz-Carlton last Wednesday.

In response to the murder, a representative of the hotel commented,

“Our thoughts are with the family of the guests involved at this very difficult time… We are cooperating with police who are continuing the investigation at the hotel."
