Police in Shanwei, Guangdong, recently revealed that a fugitive wanted for crimes dating back to 2015 was seized last month in a high-stakes chase.

The pursuit took place at 5am on November 9, when local police tracked down criminal suspect Chen Jinchao to a building in an unspecified location. According to police accounts, Chen made a run for it, grabbing a shotgun from a nearby motorcycle as he went.

In the ensuing debacle, shots were fired on both sides. The chase ended at a mountainside lychee orchard, where police finally caught Chen. In addition to the loaded gun, he was also found to be carrying a grenade.

Chen is suspected of multiple crimes in Lufeng of Shanwei city: a 2015 incident where three people were held at gunpoint and two violent assault cases this year. While searching for him, local police also seized a handgun and bullets in his home.

Yesterday, the eight policemen who caught Chen were formally recognized in a ceremony organized by the local government, after their gun firing during the pursuit was proved legitimate by a local procurator. Each policeman was given a check for RMB100,000 in return for his services.

The recent case is the second time in a month that Guangdong has seen gun violence. In late November, a Chaozhou gunman killed three in a rare incident for China, where firearm possession is highly regulated.
