How to Get the Perfect Bento Delivered in Shenzhen

What's on Waimai is a monthly column where we single out delicious delivery food choices for your dining convenience.

In-store, Tang Ben Jia is known for its deep-fried pork cutlets and unlimited shredded cabbage salad (which tastes better than it sounds). What you may not know is that the Japanese restaurant, which has outlets in Luohu, Futian and Nanshan Districts, also delivers a mean bento box complete with entree, sides and rice.

Offerings are relatively pricy for waimai, typically RMB39 and above, but still cheaper than a typical in-restaurant meal. Options include, unsurprisingly, pork cutlets, either with onions and an egg on top (RMB42) or served with rice and curry (also RMB42). A slightly healthier variation offers pork stir-fried with bell peppers and green onions as a main course (RMB39).

Branch out, however, and you may be pleasantly surprised. Two RMB39 bentos include stir-fried cabbage, lightly pickled cucumbers, seasoned rice and white fish that’s just the right balance of lean and fatty.

In case one box isn’t enough, Tang Ben Jia also has sides like a freshly made cream puff (RMB6) and a few deep-fried pork, chicken and crab dishes.

Packaging is reliable, generally preventing spillage. However, orders like the ‘hot spring egg’ – a poached affair with a firm yet creamy yolk – is best enjoyed fresh, in a restaurant setting.
