What's over quickly, sometimes photographed and usually happens at night? Leopard cat sightings.
But a leopard cat – which looks like a small leopard and is usually larger than a domestic cat – made a rare daytime appearance at 11am Friday in Shenzhen’s Dapeng, according to a November 5 Tencent News report.
The notoriously shy animal was photographed at a distance of 30 meters by a traveler from Taiwan.
The Shenzhen Daily reports that it is the second time in 'recorded history' that a leopard cat was spotted during the day in Shenzhen, with the previous daytime sighting taking place in 2010 in the Shenzhen Mangrove Reserve.
The leopard cat lives as far northeast as eastern Russia and as far south as Indonesia and its population is considered stable, according to the International Society for Endangered Cats Canada.
Leopard cats have been bred with more common domestic breeds to produce the Bengal cat.
A search on 58.com shows leopard cats retailing for RMB10,000 via an account registered in Shenzhen's Luohu, though the animals are feral and not recommended as pets.
