October Holiday Traffic Mayhem Begins in South China

Last year’s October ‘Golden Week’ holiday was memorable for the swarms of tourists who descended on just about anything worth seeing, and the transportation mayhem caused as nearly 600 million people traveled domestically or abroad.

This year, a staggering 700 million people are expected to travel, so if you are planning a trip, prepare yourself.

Today, September 30, is the last day of work for most people before they start their eight-day holiday and, based on images circulating online, it appears the rush is well underway.

Southern Metropolis Daily published photos this afternoon that show vehicles of all shapes and sizes crammed onto various Guangdong highways, with traffic creeping along at a snail’s pace. The images were all taken today and last night.

Here is an image captured by CCTV of a 15-kilometer traffic jam over Humen Bridge, which connects Dongguan to Guangzhou’s Nansha District:

The Guangdong Provincial Public Security Bureau Traffic Authority is reminding travelers to check traffic updates and to plan ahead because, you know, being stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for 12 hours sucks.
