The news report is inspiring: a 'Chinese Forrest Gump' made a 31-day trip from college in Chengdu to home in Shenzhen while flying his school's banner.

“Carrying the school flag the whole way, it’s a form of advertising for my alma mater,” Liao Xing said, according to a Cover News article.

And then you get to the last paragraph.

“Sometimes I was tired, and the people looked friendly, so I hitchhiked,” he said, estimating that one-third of the journey was actually spent riding in vehicles, particularly after his feet became blistered.

Liao, an industrial engineering sophomore at Sichuan University's Jincheng College, arrived Sunday at Shenzhen Dayun Gym's entrance, where he hooted twice to let out emotion.

It was the conclusion to a more than 2,000 kilometer trip that took him through five provinces and 40 cities and counties, according to the report. Xing traveled through Chongqing, Guizhou, Guangxi and finally Guangdong on his journey.

Xing began a training regime in March that saw him run 10km within an hour, three times per week, plus, the report adds, play basketball.

Reporters also noted that when leaving from his college, Xing filled his backpack with two pairs of pants and three shirts, one of which was five years old.
