When the criminals of Gotham saw the batsignal, they knew the Dark Knight was on their case. When California police in 1960s received taunting cypher-containing letters, they knew the sender was the notorious ‘Zodiac Killer.’ And, when factory owners in Zhongshan discovered threatening notes left by a burglar, they were presumably indignant.
“Next time I am here, if there is no 5,000 [yuan], you go figure,” read a handwritten message left in a furniture factory on the night of July 23. The facility is located in Sanxiang town, in Zhongshan, and was broken into by a 19-year-old man identified as Ren.
As his letter of extortion indicates, Ren was unhappy with the lack of booty the factory offered. Fortunately for factory owners in the area, this letter would be Ren’s last (at least for the foreseeable future), as he was arrested outside the factory by police.
Ren’s crime spree started back in April, when he quit his job at a local furniture factory and quickly blew through his savings. He began targeting furniture factories in Guhe village, in Sanxiang town, stealing copper, power tools and – believe it or not – sandpaper.
Police analyzed CCTV footage captured at the various crime scenes, which lead to Ren’s eventual arrest. During police interrogation, he admitted to committing 30 burglaries, most of which only netted the thief “worthless leftover materials.”
The disappointing loot is what eventually led Ren to conceive his threatening letter scheme. After another burglary in early July, he left a note saying: “Next time I’m here, prepare the money, or I will burn down the factory. As for the amount of money, that’s your call. Don’t blame me for not warning you.”
Ren is currently in police custody.
