A power bank burst into flames around 4.50pm on the Shenzhen Metro last Wednesday, leading to an emergency stop on Line 1 heading to Luohu, according to a report carried by the official Shenzhen Metro WeChat account.

Metro video shows a man dropping a smoking power bank to the ground, causing nearby passengers to flee. The power bank sits flaming until another passenger extinguishes it with a fire extinguisher.

The train was at the Convention and Exhibition Center, where a passenger triggered an emergency stop by pulling an in-car lever and caused the train to stop.

The incident appears to have been first reported yesterday, with the report claiming that the fire was caused because the man used his phone as it was attached to a power bank.

The report carried by the Shenzhen Metro account also says that people should not use their phones while charging them, as it will ‘harm the battery.’

This isn't true, according to common sense and this Mashable article.

The power bank may have caught fire because of poor design or a faulty battery.
