Guangdong Experiences Best Air Quality in 28 Years

Air quality in Guangdong in 2016 was the best it's been in 28 years, according to a bulletin by the Guangdong Meteorological Service, with an average of 29 ‘hazy’ (a slightly nicer term than smoggy) days – the lowest number since 1989.

The promising statistic is down six days from 2015, which saw an average of 35 hazy days. The largest drop was in the Pearl River Delta region, according to the bulletin, which saw 37 smoggy days in 2016, down from 49 in 2015.

According to the Guangdong Meteorological Service, the improvement is the result of effectively implemented environmental policies. The same bulletin states that Guangdong also saw an increase in area covered by plant growth in 2016, with 76.17 percent of the province blanketed in vegetation, up 3.36 percent from 2015.

While the news is undoubtedly positive, the bureau notes that Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhaoqing, Jiangmen, Dongguan, Jieyang and a number of other cities still have room for air quality improvement. The need for anti-pollution measures was demonstrated back in May of this year, when air quality in the Pearl River Delta was worse than Beijing (the Chinese city, as we all know, most notorious for crappy air).
