A word from the wise: if you plan to smuggle goods into Guangdong by attaching them to your body, don’t do it in the summer, when the extra layers of baggy clothing are super, super suspicious.
This lesson in cross-border crime was recently learned the hard way by a woman from Hong Kong, who was caught at the Luohu customs checkpoint with 20 kilograms of gadgets wrapped around her abdomen.
The bust (no pun intended) happened around 8pm on June 30, when customs officials noticed a woman wearing strangely bulky clothing for the hot summer temperatures we tend to get in South China.
"Recently the weather has been hot, but she was wearing a little too much,” an unnamed customs official is quoted as stating. “Her arms and legs were slim, but her upper body looked bloated; the proportions of her body were really off.”

She was immediately deemed a potential smuggler – a suspicion that was confirmed after she went through the metal detector, which began beeping like a Vegas slot machine.
In accordance with Chinese law, the Hong Konger was then searched by immigration officials. She was discovered to be carrying 102 iPhones and 15 Swiss watches, with the entire haul reportedly weighing 20 kilograms.
The punishment dished out to the smuggler is currently unknown, but it’s safe to assume that her cache was seized by authorities.
This latest phone smuggling bust comes just over a month after officials at Shenzhen’s Huanggang Port busted 10 students illegally importing an estimated RMB1 million in products in return for ice cream and McDonald's.
