Here's an unconventional way to celebrate the Fourth of July, or US Independence Day: send hongbao to Chinese companies that read, 'Are you ready to take over America?'
It's part of a clever marketing campaign by company ITTIZ, which in partnership with Global from Asia sent out real US currency to 500 of Shenzhen's largest companies. Each bill features the face of a Chinese emperor (a removable sticker), designed to blend in with the background.
Companies targeted by the campaign include smartphone makers Huawei, Oppo, ZTE and Meizu; computer brand Lenovo; and top drone company DJI.
The idea behind the ad campaign was conceived a few months ago, in reaction to the Trump presidency. Besides poking fun at US politics, it's also meant to teach local companies 'the value of thinking creatively.'
According to ITTIZ CEO Sean Davis, "We wanted to show that Shenzhen is not only a place for hardware innovation, but for innovation on all fronts, such as, in our case, marketing, branding, and design."
