Now that summer is in full swing in Shenzhen, hiking or biking outdoors can feel more like a test of endurance than pure fun. But never fear, active (and not so active) types – we've got you covered. Literally.
The following five sporty activities can all be done inside the comfort of an air-conditioned room. Plus, we've looked up a couple prime options in each category so, you know, no sweat.
Archery
Ace Adam Archery Club
Never held a bow in your life? No worries. For as low as RMB65 you can get an hour of access to professional equipment and a US-trained 'international instructor' at this 'archery club.'
10.30am-9.30pm. Ace Archery Club.
Juxianzhuang Archery Range
With three establishments (Chegongmiao, Houhai and Xixiang), Juxianzhuang offers relative convenience. It lacks internationally-trained instructors, but does offer darts, ping pong and pool. Plus, for RMB89 at the Chegongmiao or Houhai range, you can get two hours' access to shooting plus all of the above.
10am-10.30pm. Juxianzhuang Archery Range (Chegongmiao).
Batting
Yinghao Baseball Club
For good old-fashioned indoor batting cages, check out Yinghao in Shekou. For RMB30 you get 24 balls and a drink. RMB50 is a similar deal, but for two people.
10.30am-9.30pm. Yinghao Baseball Club.
Swing Cage
Swing Cage is run by Bluesox Baseball, who we previously profiled in our Social Skills feature. Their batting cages aren't indoors, but their bar, which stocks both bottled and draft beer, is. We recommend visiting at night for a cooler experience. 20 batting cage tokens and a Pocari Sweat will cost you RMB39.
10am-12am. Swing Cage.
Bowling
Bowling Training Base
This old-fashioned shop, with its rainbow-colored balls, may bring back fond childhood memories. It's cheap, too, with a RMB50 deal that includes six rounds from 9am-7pm on weekdays (or four rounds past 7pm), plus two pairs of bowling shoes.
9am-11pm. Bowling Training Base.
Bobo Bowling Club
With colorful lighting and other nightclub-like decor, Bobo's attempting to make bowling cool again. Unfortunately, it also comes with a higher pricetag – one hour of bowling will cost you at least RMB98.
10am-12am. Bobo Bowling Club.
Climbing
Mountain Top Rock Climbing Gym
A good way for beginners to get a leg up on rock climbing, Mountain Top is also conveniently located for Shekou dwellers. The starting price for a one-person 'experience package' is RMB40.
10am-9pm. Mountain Top Rock Climbing Gym.
Shenzhen Eastern Rock Climbing Gym
Don't be deceived by the cute cartoon characters on the climbing walls; some of them are pretty challenging. The gym provides ample chance to test your bouldering (climbing without the aid of ropes or other equipment) skills in a safe environment. RMB48 buys you an hour of climbing, while unlimited access costs RMB88.
2-10pm. Shenzhen Eastern Rock Climbing Gym.
Trampoline
Koolfly Trampoline Park
Who says trampolines have to be for kids? For RMB148 you and a friend (RMB88 for one) can get the run of the place – a giant trampoline floor plus foam pit – for an hour.
10am-9pm. Koolfly Trampoline Park.
Jumping Park Trampoline Park
For identical prices (RMB88 for one, RMB148 for two), you'll have an hour of access to a trampoline park very similar to the one above. One possible downside: this park's in Longhua District, all the way at the Northern tip of subway line 4.
9.30am-9.30pm. Jumping Park Trampoline Park.
