In Finnish-sauna level humidity, White Collar Fight Night’s June 9 press conference saw fighters take to a small stage, pose for photos and talk a bit of trash outside of Xpats Bar & Lounge in Futian District.
White Collar Fight Night organizer, founder of new boutique gym Project 0/1 and overall man-behind-the curtain John Graham called the fighters to stage, evidently reciting their names, sponsors and June 17 fight times from memory.
“Every morning I wake up, and take two pills of deer penis,” Godfather Bistro sponsored Oliver ‘The Enforcer’ Sher said into a microphone, detailing his training regime. “And then meditate under a waterfall – so my qi is greater!”
That’s PRD intern alum Chris ‘the Canadian Club’ Webster took to the stage, donning a red hat and redder beard before saying how he would take down his opponent, James ‘the Jackhammer’ O’Brien.
“I’m going to move around him,” said Webster “I’m going to f*ck him up, and that will be that about that.”
In a more conciliatory tone, future-opponents Joan Huang and Fiona took to the stage holding hands.
“I think I will win,” said Fiona.
“I will win too,” said Huang.
“Let’s win together,” Fiona said.
A Heart for China is the charity set to benefit from Shenzhen’s second White Collar Fight Night, and volunteer group founder Ronny Verdoodt explained his organization from stage. He said the group consists of about 2,500 volunteers that visit schools for the disabled each weekend to interact with children.
“The reason we’re doing this is to get exposure for the group,” Verdoodt said after the conference. “It’s not about donations.”
Late-to-the-game Abnet sponsored Richard ‘the Grey Goose’ Chace decided to throw his hat into the ring only about a month ago.
“I’m a loving man in my heart,” Chace said. “But this is going to wind up as war.”
After the conference, Chace said he gave up drinking to get in shape, holding up a bottle of water. Describing himself as relatively fit, he said the biggest problem was being in the right set of mind to fight someone, so he turned to a hypnotherapist.
“She got me where I need to be,” he said.
White-collar fight events see white-collar workers trade the cubicle for the ring for one night, traditionally benefiting a charity.
